PHUKET, THAILAND 2009

This dreary March weather in Toronto makes me miss tropical climates like Thailand!

I want to lay on the beach and stare at stretches of white hot sand and crystal blue water; I want to eat spicy seafood dishes at outdoor restaurants that line the streets of Thailand; I want to play with elephants and monkeys at animal sanctuaries.

I really want to be anywhere but here right now - away from the stormy weather and my downward spiraling mental state. 

I haven’t blogged for months. So, I’m very happy to say that I am slowly trying to clamor my way out of this hole by booking two vacations for the near future:

Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic in April

New York City (again!) in July

Things are looking up! =)

Alberta - Banff, Lake Louise and Jasper in particular, have a special place in my heart. My only visit there with family was not especially fun, but the beautiful landscapes will be forever etched into my brain. I have wanted to go back since my last visit six or seven years ago. However, vacationing there is a tad pricey. I am aiming to save enough money to go in summer 2014. Stay tuned! =)

Ever since I saw Sofia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette back in 2006, it had been my dream to eat macarons. As soon as I saw the luscious colours on film, and the delicate crumble of soft almond meringue fall from Kirsten Dunst’s fingertips, I was encaptured by this lavish treat. Before that point, the existence of macarons was unknown to me. Online research quickly led me towards the wonderful world of Ladurée.

Not only were their confections featured in Marie Antoinette, it was also enjoyed by fictional character, Blair Waldorf of the hit show, Gossip Girl...

According to their official website, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) is, “a place that fuels creativity, ignites minds, and provides inspiration.” It was truly everything it claimed to be. My time at the MOMA was marvelous to say the least. There is a certain thrill to seeing renowned works of art I have read about all my life. Finally feasting my eyes on Van Goghs and Monets was exhilarating. These are the artists I spent years writing school reports about; the same artists the world has spent decades admiring. At last, I could see Van Goghs’The Starry Night up close. And see it I did....

Not much sightseeing was done on our first day in New York. Traveling internationally and settling in to our accommodations was exhausting enough. The 33ºC (92ºF) weather only worsened our fatigue. We squeezed in a sushi lunch and bought groceries before retreating to our room at the Affinia Dumont.

The clean and spacious Affinia Dumont hotel is located in east midtown Manhattan on 34^th Street (between Lexington Avenue and 3^rd Avenue). The staff were friendly and the service was excellent. It is rated 92% on TripAdvisorand 4 out of 5 stars on Expedia, Travelocity, and Hotels.com.
