INSPIRATIONAL SUNDAYS – FOOD FLAGS

The last post of today continues to follow the “food art” topic. To promote the Sydney International Food Festival, advertising agency, WHYBIN\TBWA were challenged to recreate multiple country’s flags by using the foods they are commonly associated with.

Here are my six favourite food flags and their ingredients:

1 – Thailand – sweet chilli sauce, shredded coconut, blue swimmer crab

2 – Brazil – banana leaf, limes, pineapple, passion fruit

3 – Vietnam – rambutan, lychee, starfruit

4 – India – two types of curries, rice, pappadum wafer

5 – UK – scone, clotted cream, blueberry and strawberry jam

6 – Italy – basil leaves, spaghetti, tomatoes

Before the end of this CNE season, I had to go one more time! How could I pass up another chance to devour weird and greasy foods?

Believe it or not, Instagram has been an influential deciding factor in my food selections this year. The most appetizing and more frequently posted items were quickly added to my list of things to try. The “Cronut Burger” (Epic Burger), “Chowdah Fries” (Jack’s Lobster), and “Deep Fried Mac and Cheese Curds” (Mac & Cheesery) were all choices made by persuasive Instagram photos. Before my second visit to The Ex, I instinctively did some Insta-research for food inspirations.

NEW YORK CITY – Review Part V (Chelsea Market)

While wandering up Ninth Avenue for art galleries, we stumbled upon a quaint marketplace.

In the 1890s, the National Biscuit Company built a two million square feet factory that stretches from Ninth to Tenth Avenue, and up 15^th to 16^th Street. The former Oreo production house now resides big broadcasting companies like the Food Network and Oxygen Media. Located directly below the corporate businesses is Chelsea Market. Multicultural foods, adorable desserts, and a vast array of shops were set against a back drop of brick walls and exposed pipes. This rustic chic destination was a visual and palatal feast that attracted locals and tourists alike.

Ever since I saw Sofia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette back in 2006, it had been my dream to eat macarons. As soon as I saw the luscious colours on film, and the delicate crumble of soft almond meringue fall from Kirsten Dunst’s fingertips, I was encaptured by this lavish treat. Before that point, the existence of macarons was unknown to me. Online research quickly led me towards the wonderful world of Ladurée.

Not only were their confections featured in Marie Antoinette, it was also enjoyed by fictional character, Blair Waldorf of the hit show, Gossip Girl...

FUTURE ADVENTURES - CNE 2013

One of the largest annual fairs in North America, the Canadian National Exhibition (CNE or The Ex) opened for it’s 134th year this past Friday. Back again, are the rides, parades, games and the notorious food building. The strange and artery clogging delicacies offered there are the most sought after features of this event. Anything from donut burgers, to chocolate covered bacon to deep fried cherry cola can be found.

This year, a new heart attack inducer has arrived! Dubbed the “Cronut Burger”, it is a cheeseburger housed between a bun best described as a cross between a donut and a croissant. Maple-bacon jam is then spread on top of this sweet and savory concoction. Multiple media outlets and blogs have already given their opinions and reviews on this burger.
